HYTHE, THE NEW
FOREST AND SURROUNDING AREA
There is a
wide choice of restaurants for evening meals within a few minutes drive;
Cuisine choices include traditional English, Indian, Italian, Chinese,
Mediterranean and of course, fish
and chips!
The Forest Home pub restaurant is very popular for good food
and drinks and is just a short walk from the Four Seasons.
There
is a local convenience
supermarket store just two
doors along the road. Here you will find a sub Post Office, ATM
cash machine (indoor), provisions, newspapers, wine, beer and most
other household items.
Hythe
centre is about a mile away and has a wide range of
interesting shops. There is also a large pleasure craft
marina. You are free to walk around the marina - there are
seats with superb views up and down Southampton Water where there are
always ships and yachts coming and going. The liners
Arcadia and Queen Mary 2 regularly berth here.
The
Hythe Ferry is an experience not to be missed; it provides a
short, half hourly service across the river. The ferry berths at
the end of a long pier on the Hythe side. You are
transported from the quayside along the pier to the ferry on an ancient
narrow gauge railway. The ferry provides a quick, easy and
cheap way of visiting the centre of Southampton and the West
Quay shopping mall. See the Ferry website here.
The New Forest National Park is just a mile or so to the west. The
National Motor Museum with its
famous collection of over 300 old vehicles can be found in
Beaulieu (3 miles). Just south of Beaulieu on Beaulieu River is
Bucklers Hard, where Nelson's flagship Agamemnon was built
centuries ago. There is a visitor centre and museum here
and the Hotel serves good food and ale.
Not far from Beaulieu and well worth a day out is Exbury Gardens
with its famous collection of flowering shrubs. Just south
of Exbury is Lepe Country Park - with a great children's
playground and a snack bar. The beach here is a
particularly good place to watch all kinds of sea birds.
Calshot
Spit is just a few miles south of the Four Seasons. The spit marks the
point where Southampton Water meets the Solent on the western side. There is a sports
activity centre here which includes some awesome indoor climbing
walls. Calshot Castle can be visited during the summer
months. There is long shingle beach at Calshot and fine
views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. This is a
great place to watch yacht racing in the Solent.
